What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a "pomodoro", from the Italian word for tomato.

How to Use the Timer

  1. Pick a task: Decide on the task you want to work on.
  2. Start the timer: Click "Start" on the Pomodoro setting (25 minutes).
  3. Work continuously: Focus on your task without any distractions until the timer ends.
  4. Take a short break: When the timer rings, select "Short Break" and rest for 5 minutes.
  5. Take a long break: After completing four pomodoros (cycles), take a longer 15-minute break.

Why it works

  • Prevents burnout: Frequent breaks keep your mind fresh and focused.
  • Reduces distractions: Knowing you only have to focus for 25 minutes makes it easier to resist checking social media.
  • Improves estimation: Over time, you'll get better at estimating how many pomodoros a task will take.

FAQ

Can I change the timer lengths?

Currently, this tool uses the standard 25-5-15 minute intervals which are scientifically proven to be the most effective for most people. Custom intervals may be added in a future update.

Will the timer run if I switch tabs?

Modern browsers often throttle JavaScript in background tabs to save battery. While the timer will try to keep running, it is recommended to keep the tab active or visible in a separate window for strict accuracy.
